There are five columns on the effort reports, labeled “Spons Res,” “Instr,” “Dept Res,” “Patient” and “Admin.” What do these columns mean and where do I place my effort entries?
• Sponsored Research – All research and development activities that are: (1) separately budgeted and accounted for; (2) sponsored by a federal source; and (3) cost sharing related to sponsored research activities. Cost sharing is effort expended on sponsored research activities that is greater than the amount of salary paid by the sponsoring agency or organization. • Instruction – Teaching and training activities of our institution. Instruction includes time spent in the following activities: (1) didactic teaching; (2) supervision of undergraduate students, graduate students, medical students, pre-doctoral students, post-doctoral students, residents and fellows; and (3) other specific activities as defined by your department. • Department Research Research development and scholarly activities that are: (1) funded by the department from departmental accounts; (2) accounted for within the department; and (3) not related to a sponsored project.
