The worst floods in Pakistan for 80 years are surely yet another indication of the impact climate changes are having on our planet?
The flooding in Pakistan cannot be directly attributed to climate change, but floods caused by more intense rains like this are entirely consistent with climate change predictions of more extreme weather, and are certainly illustrative of the kinds of events that we would expect to occur with increasing frequency and severity as climate change continues to gather pace. Nonetheless, disasters such as these are a clear reminder of the impact of climate change on the world’s poorest. As developed nations continue to drag their feet on reaching a new fair and legally binding deal in the climate negotiations, the cost is already being measured in human lives. Governments must make progress in Cancun in December – particularly on agreeing finance to help vulnerable communities to adapt to a changing climate and prepare for disasters.
