The Vera Institute of Justice report identified “process” problems, what does this mean?
Persons entering the criminal justice system flow through many processes (e.g., arrest, booking, pre-trial assessment, etc.). The extent of coordination and interaction of these processes influences the efficiency and effectiveness of the entire criminal justice system. The jail is just part of the entire criminal justice system. The Vera Institute suggests that the outcomes of the entire justice system may be improved by better coordination of the various entities involved (police, judges, corrections, probation, etc.). Further analysis and improvement of these functions is the focus of the Criminal Justice Commission. Progress has been made on improving processes regarding inmate extraditions and the separation of misdemeanor and felony charges between the County Municipal and Common Pleas courts.
