The whois service provided by the US Domain Registrar, NeuStar, only contains information relating to the domains in the .US name space that it has direct control over. For authoritative contact information on third-level domains, see Contacts Information for Delegated Domains. Please keep in mind that the final authority on registration is what is actually available in DNS.
