The tennis season is so short, what can a tennis coach do to really improve their players?
First of all, we encourage our players to play a good deal of competition in the summer and provide them with some detailed information on proper nutrition, conditioning, junior tennis tournaments, and weight training. Many varsity tennis players play other team sports and also have time to become members of local indoor tennis facilities where they can practice on Sundays and other free time during the week. Once the season starts, we work hard to strengthen our players weakest strokes and also make their strong shots stronger. We do not try to make a baseline player a serve and volley player and we do not try to have the players change grips or go from a one-hand backhand to a two-handed backhand. We also stress nutrition, proper sleep and relaxation techniques though deep breathing and the power of positive thinking.
