The Stony Brook campus card has a smart chip. What does the smart chip do and how does it work?
The smart chip is made up of sections. Each section of the chip is referred to as a purse. The purse holds money and can hold it in different ways. The first purse, referred to as Purse #1, holds up to $50.00 and operates without a pin at various vending, laundry locations across campus, as well as to pay library fines. This purse can be loaded at the various cash to chip machines located around campus. The second purse, Purse #2, is a secure purse and requires a PIN be entered in order for purchases to be made. This purse is only used at selected locations around campus. Those locations include: Seawolf Marketplace Melville Library Galleria Cart Barnes & Noble Bookstore Matthews Bookstore Computer Corner This purse can be loaded at either Campus Card Office or at any cash to chip machine located around campus.
