The restriction of less than 100,000 characters across 4 graphics is causing me to rework my design and otherwise cramping my style. Why this strict limit on file sizes and tags for our Project #1?

This part of the requirement is to get y’all thinking about size of graphics, and to get some experience with one of the graphics editors and learn their limitation. Cropping, re-sizing the image, and increasing the compression to reduce the ‘byte size’ of the image all have ‘trade offs’ and I hope you get a good introduction to this most basic topic of graphics for the web. This and the other restriction in use of tags are also to get students used to the idea that somebody else other than the programmer owns most of the software written and ‘specifications’ are followed. These are not meant to be limits to creativity, and the hope is the requirement will be met elegantly & professionally. But you can earn your points by making it simple and ‘mechanically correct’. An advice I’ve give a few students in this regard is to work on a very small interface, perhaps for a smart-phone, or for a post-card sized web page rather than one that stretches across the wide screen.
