What does a hypoallergenic facial cleanser mean for you? For the cosmetic companies, this word hypoallergenic can mean what they want it to mean, rather like Alice in Wonderland! For me, it means that I want a facial cleanser which is NOT going to cause an allergic reaction, or at least, the chances of that happening are minimal. In fairness to the FDA, they did try to regulate the word hypoallergenic on cosmetic products about 35 years ago but they lost the battle. They tried to insist that if that word was used, then the companies would have to pay for the research to show that it was indeed not causing any allergies in humans. You can imagine the furore that caused and the powerful lobbies won. In the end the FDA said that they just had to list all the ingredients. It was up to the consumer to watch out for possible allergens. That means, you and I have to be really careful and we might not know what we could be allergic to.
