The offering of scarifices to God appears in early Genesis with Cain and Abel and seems to have continued, for the Jews anyway, at least until the time of Jesus. Is the practice of offering sacrifices still a part of the Jewish religion today?

From the time that King Solomon built the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, Jews were only allowed to bring sacrifices in that Temple. The Romans destroyed that Temple almost 2000 years ago, ending the rituals of sacrifices. Nowadays, the structure and timing of the daily Jewish prayers are designed to replace those sacrifices. Just as they would bring sacrifices in the morning and afternoon, we pray at those times. We include a brief description of the sacrifices in our prayers. Sacrifices would burn on the altar into the night, to we have a third daily prayer after dark.
