Some methods, such as TUNEL (DNA labeling), do not discern necrotic and apoptotic cells. Since the epitope on cytokeratin 18 is only exposed after caspase cleavage during apoptosis, the M30-Apoptosense assay distinguishes between apoptotic, necrotic, and viable cells.
