This program was developed in response to the national discussion on the future direction of engineering. The National Academy of Engineering’s (NAE) Engineer of 2020: Visions of Engineering in the New Century explores the types of social problems tomorrow’s engineers will likely face and makes recommendations for how best to prepare them. The MDE program intends to prepare the “engineer of 2020” after NAE’s vision. The MDE program was supported by a $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF)-an outstanding endorsement. The Engineering Education Advisory Council (E2AC) member companies have also whole-heartedly embraced this program.
