It may be shade tree anthracnose which is caused by a fungus that infects the leaves when they emerge in the spring. Cool weather favors anthracnose. Manage it by pruning out and destroying dead twigs and rake and destroy fallen leaves. Call the Garden Hotline for an information sheet.
