The Joint Task Force on Exams advised implementing all of its recommendations, including the RRR week, as a coordinated package in Fall 2010. Why was the RRR week implemented in Fall 2009?
The Academic Senate and administration leadership felt that the RRR week would result in considerable pedagogical benefits for both students and instructors and should be implemented as soon as possible to maximize that benefit. Unfortunately, the announcement of this change to the fall calendar was delayed while the campus awaited the UC systemwide decision on the implementation rules for furloughs. A combination of a new RRR week plus mandated furloughs on teaching days would have significantly reduced what could be covered in courses and would have been detrimental to the quality of teaching and learning at Berkeley. As soon as it was determined at the systemwide level that faculty furloughs would not be taken on days of instruction, the campus implemented RRR week.
