Special Behavioral Units should also be excluded from the indicator. Q: We have a Looked after child who was an inpatient at an adolescent mental health unit attached to a psychiatric hospital but with a school attached to the unit. The child was due to be placed in a mainstream school but this broke down and she is now in a Residential Home with Education provision attached. My query is does the above fall into the special school category as far as attendance is concerned. A: The type of setting you have discussed in your query would effectively be ‘home education’ provided by the LEA and would not be classed as a special school. This setting however is not really the type of mainstream school/education that the PI is trying to identify. Therefore do not include this scenario in the Pi.
