The fall of the classical Roman Empire was brought about by a change of emphasis (and mentality). Up to the reign of Trajan the army was designed to be an aggressive, offensive force – its purpose was to expand the empire through the use of infantry supported by cavalry; the land gained could be held with relatively few troops while the army moved on into somewhere else. After the conquest of Dacia it soon became apparent that the army was too small to continue this process of expanding the Empire. Gradually the emphasis changed, so that by the 3rd century AD the main force was heavy-armed cavalry, supported by lighter-armed infantry. The legions, although they still existed in name, became much reduced in terms of numbers of troops and their equipment was extremely poor compared with earlier types – helmets were made in a two-part construction, for example and were much less robust than the earlier Imperial Gallic types. Body armour for the infantry gradually disappeared altogether. T
