Backward religious regimes have existed in the past and continue to exist today, they trample on the rights of the individual, perpetuate misogyny, and are thoroughly reprehensible in more ways than I’d care to enumerate. Are they, however, proof that humanity is better off without theistic religions? I think not. No right-minded liberal atheist can deny that overall, humanity’s lot has improved in the past few hundred years. Proportionally, less people starve, more people have an education, more people are literate, the standard of living is higher, and people live much longer. Is this in spite of theistic religion, because of theistic religion, or totally unconnected to theistic religion? I’ve always argued that the God construct theists employ is but a reflection of their own desires and motives, in other words “God” is not to blame.
