The Dog Star is called Sirius and is in the constellation Canis Major — and is the brightest and most beautiful star”
The mighty hunter Orion rules the winter skies — easily identifiable by his belt, which is three stars in almost perfect alignment. Rising forty minutes or so behind Orion will be his two hunting dogs, Canis Major and Canis Minor. What is called the Dog Star is Sirius — an extremely beautiful and prismatic star, the brightest in the winter sky — and is supposed to be the nose of the dog Canis Major. Another star, called Procyon, is the little dog star. About the only ASTRONOMY correlation might be the fact that the sun eclipses (or ‘is in’) the constellation of Canis Major (and the Dog Star, Sirius) during the “Dog Days” The star is beautiful and most prominant in the winter skies, the perfect Christmas star, and is visible from September (late night/early morning) to April (in the west at sunset) — and is pretty close to the middle of the Southern skies around midnight around Christmas.
