Ingres takes care of archiving this file. There is a backup copy in the dump location of the database. Also in the dump location, there is a backup of this file each time a checkpoint is performed. If you have just run checkpoint 23, you will find a file c0000023.dmp which is a copy of the configuration file at the time of the checkpoint.
