The Castle Pines North Metropolitan District currently collects two separate taxes — one equal to 19 mills and the other is for 24 mills. What are these taxes currently being used for?
The 19 mill property tax is what we call the operation and maintenance mill levy and is used primarily for the operation of the Districts parks and open space including street medians. The District has approximately 38.5 acres of turf and 350.6 acres of native and natural open space. Additionally the District uses this money to improve facilities such as trails and playground equipment (i.e. Retreat Park), construct recreational amenities such as the skate park at Coyote Ridge Park, upgrade landscaping on District owned property, and paying two full time employees and a portion of the salaries of three other full time employees. Over the past three years we have also transferred from this mill levy approximately $500,000 per year to the Utility Enterprise. This transfer is in full compliance with the TABOR amendment and helps keep water and wastewater rates reasonable while preserving the income tax benefit associated with property taxes. Without this transfer water and wastewater rate
