Although biological filters are great for helping reduce the amount of toxins and pollutants in the water, they are poorly equipped to be able to handle larger items that may get stuck in the system. Cleaning out leaves and twigs from the filter is not something that biological filters are very good at. A mechanical filter, however, is much more effective at ensuring that the water is able to flow freely through the filter without being constrained by twigs or sticks. Mechanical pre-filters are able to keep the water moving freely and, in turn, improve the overall productivity of the pond.
