There is no question that Australia’s air safety record is one that the entire aviation industry can be proud of. However, it would clearly be counter productive to use a tragic accident as the sole catalyst for change. The system doesn’t need to be ‘broken’ for effective reform to take place. The NAS project is about making a good system safer, by concentrating resources more heavily on those areas that pose the greatest level of risk, eg, around busy airports and corridors with the highest traffic density.
