The 12 who walked on the moon: Where are they now?

0

By Helen Anders AMERICAN-STATESMAN Saturday, July 11, 2009 After you walk on the moon, what’s next? The 12 men who stepped onto the lunar surface as part of the Apollo program have taken diverse paths — many delving into private industry, some writing books, one taking up a paintbrush and canvas. Some have continued to make public appearances on behalf of the space program, while others — notably Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon — have avoided the spotlight. Three are no longer alive to witness the recent discussion about a return to the moon. Here’s where the moon walkers are now, 40 years after the moon landing of Apollo 11: Neil Armstrong. A Navy aviator, Armstrong flew 78 combat missions in Korea before becoming the first man to walk on the moon. He left NASA in 1971 and served on numerous boards. He has consistently avoided interviews and autograph-seekers, threatening a lawsuit against his barber in 2005 after the man sold a lock of Armstrong’s hair to a collector. Armst
