The 12 steps are spiritually based; how are Metasteps different?

We believe that the core of one’s addiction stems from numerous faulty beliefs, especially deep-seated misinformation about God and one’s relationship to God. While the 12-step program leaves a person to formulate their own conception of God, it does little to assist a person in honestly evaluating and uprooting the old beliefs, and in finding more effective ones that will work to overcome any problem. Therefore most people end up accepting the conceptions of God they learned as a child. To expect different results from such beliefs, however, is a simple error in judgment, for these old beliefs were chief contributors to the addiction and misfortune we experienced in the first place. Even those who choose a new concept are usually unaware of how deeply rooted the old beliefs really are and how they are still having a negative effect on their lives (remember the saying, “you can take the boy out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the boy!”?). So common and overlooked
