That does the CPU simulator software do?
A student should be able to write a program in the assembly language of the computer being simulated and run it in the simulator and be able to watch the execution of the program instruction-by-instruction. This usually involves reading the contents of memory after each instruction has been executed. That is, the simulator displays the state of a computer after the execution of an instruction. This sounds like the type of simulator (e.g., SPIM) that we use in my architecture class That’s correct. There are a lot of both professional and educational simulators available – some of them are in the public domain and you can download them freely. This gives you an opportunity to look at what’s already out there and to design your own unique product.
