Ulex replies I have to confess that I’ve never tried it but since the ligands in the first two cases are involatile, I would have thought that the sulphates of these copper complexes could be crystallised by the normal concentration and cooling methods. Tetramminecopper(II) sulphate is quite another matter, since heating the solution displaces the equilibrium because ammonia is driven off. Rendle, Vokins and Davis, in ‘Experimental Chemistry’ (now, alas, long out of print) give this set of directions: Dissolve 5 g of copper(II) sulphate-5-water in 20 cm3 of water. Add 2M ammmonia, with shaking, until the precipitate formed just dissolves. Add 30 cm3 of ethanol and leave in a refrigerator or ice-bath. Filter the crystals at the pump and wash with cold ethanol containing a drop of concentrated (0.880)ammonia. I have done this one and it does work!
