DVD video is a higher resolution than VHS. Standard VHS video has 320 dots per line and DVD video has 720 dots per line. However, DVD video quality still depends on many production factors (including the amount of compression used) and the display device it is viewed on. DVDs will usually (but not always, see dvd rot) last much longer than videotape.
