Telford as a new town has a younger population – if children’s services are all going to be in one place, shouldn’t it be in Telford?
Children’s Services are not going to all be in one place. The proposals are that both hospitals at Telford and Shrewsbury will have children’s assessment units. These would be the ‘front door’ for all sick children at both hospitals. They would provide tests, care and treatment for routine and emergency issues. There would also be a ‘Hospital at Home’ service, providing care to appropriate sick children in their own homes, and this would cover Telford and Wrekin and Shropshire. It is proposed that once these new services are up and running, inpatient children’s services would be concentrated in either Telford or Shrewsbury. The reasons for this are explained in FAQ No.15. No decision has yet been made about whether inpatient Children’s’ Services should be concentrated at Shrewsbury or Telford. There is more work being done now to consider the impact of the proposals and the different options on different communities, and this will look at issues about the make-up of various populations
