Teeth can be damaged by acid erosion , what food could contribute to this problem ?
1. Fruit smoothies are particularly dangerous, since people tend to sip them over long periods of time. They’re full of citric acid, which can cause damage if consumed regularly. Likewise, any fruit juice—especially citrus juice—can cause similar damage. 2. Pickles. Pickle juice, or brine, is highly acidic, breaking down tooth enamel if pickles are consumed in large quantities. 3. Clear soda. It’s common knowledge that the sugar in soda can erode enamel and the coloring in cola-type sodas can cause stains. 4. Raisins. Although they contain beneficial antioxidants and are generally considered a healthy snack, raisins’ high sugar content and natural stickiness make them poor choices for dental health. 5. Yogurt and other fermented foods also contain lactic acid, which can erode teeth.
It is NOT about stickiness. People will incorrectly tell you that any food that sticks to your teeth will be a problem. The truth is that food on your teeth feeds the bacteria that live on your teeth, and when the bacteria eat the food, they create acid that erodes your teeth. Brushing and flossing will help reduce the amount of bacteria. As to food, those that stay on your teeth a long time are the worst. Most foods that you think of as sticky contain sugar. Sugar is very sticky to your fingers, but if you put some on your teeth, your saliva will wash it off very, very quickly. Things that will stick to your teeth are things that don’t seem sticky to your fingers, like bread. Bread will leave a nice coating on your teeth that will feed the bacteria for a long time, and it will wash off very slowly in your saliva. Bottom line: swish some water around your mouth if you can’t brush after a meal, but brush twice a day and floss at least once a day.
