Student Village Ethernet – What will it cost?
You need an ethernet card in your computer (This is not a modem – modems are used for off-campus connection through telephone lines. Ethernet has a maximum speed about 25 times faster than the modems we use off campus). These cost from about $30 for a desktop PC ethernet card, from $125 for an Apple Mac ethernet card, and from around $100 for a laptop (PCMCIA) card. Netway preferred Student Village supplier, but you may prefer to contact your computer’s seller. The ongoing cost you pay is for the Internet traffic to your machine. The University provides free e-mail to students using their student.murdoch.edu.au mail accounts, and free Internet traffic within PARNet (Murdoch, UWA, Curtin, ECU and the CSIRO). However free Internet access is denied to sites off PARNet. To obtain unrestricted Internet access, students have the option of paying for enhanced Internet access.
