The most important thing to remember about our treatment is that our goal is to make muscle and nerve communicate optimally. The reason we do not support the use of passive muscle stretching and massage is that the end effect of both is muscle relaxation. Muscle is a contractile tissue, not a “relaxile” tissue. When muscle is forced to relax by either stretching or massage, it loses its ability to contract. The result of muscle relaxation is joint instability, decreased athletic performance, and increased risk of injury.
