Either approach is fine. There are several advantages to connecting to the relay: (1.) The connections aren’t exposed to battery acid, and (2.) it avoids the need for long wire runs between TRIK-L-START™ and widely-separated battery compartments. However, in situations where the relay can’t be located (or is difficult to access), connections directly to the battery posts will work just fine.
