Not exactly. Human beings are far more complicated organisms than fish or frogs, which is why “reconfiguring” of sex organs spontaneously cannot happen. However, there are many factors can alter the normal development of a fetus, regardless of the chromosomes. There are conditions that can cause a child with female (XX) chromosomes to be born looking like a boy. At puberty, however, fully functioning ovaries will feminize the child. If the child was raised as a boy, “he” will effectively become a “she.” Although, technically speaking, the child was always GENETICALLY female and only secondary sexual characteristics will be affected. The opposite can occur in a child who is chromosomally male (XY) with a delayed virilization occuring in puberty. In those cases, the child appears to be female at birth and is usually raised as a girl. When hormone levels change during puberty, however, masculinization occurs which appears to transform the girl into a boy as secondary sexual characteristic
