Speaking of confidentiality of records, how does LSSI ensure patron privacy?
LSSI takes the confidentiality of customer records very seriously. Privacy of library customer records is required by California law. All staff members are trained in how to interact with the public to explain the statute and why they cannot reveal, for example in California, what a child has checked out to a parent unless the child has given written permission for the adult to access the record. Because the public does not always understand the reason for the law—or agree with it—LSSI has created handouts and other information to help staff members to talk with the public about the requirements of the law. Only those LSSI employees who are acting within the scope of their duties within the administration of the Library will have access to confidential customer records.
