There is some batch-to-batch color variation in the SAE 50 transmission lubricant due to the level of moisture in the product. This variation in moisture can come from the raw materials used in the formulation or from a partially used drum of gear oil in storage. The color of the product can go from deep metallic purple to a yellow-orange depending on the water level present. This moisture does not hurt the product or limit its long drain capabilities. Once inside the transmission, the oil will heat up and dry itself out and will then assume the darker purplish color. However, if there is a visible water layer present, the product should not be used.
