This has been seen to occur due to bugs in some versions of LessTif. You may want to try OpenMotif instead if it is available for your distribution. One caveat that was found on Slackware 8.1 is the need to delete all the text in the /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/config/host.def file otherwise it still refers to the LessTif installation.
