Some of the lower branches of my spruce tree are dying. What is wrong?

Two possibilities are cytospora canker and spruce spider mites. To check for mites, shake a branch over white paper and check for moving reddish brown spots. If you see a large number of these, spider mites may be the problem. Sap oozing from the dying branches and /or trunk may indicate canker.
