Some of the historical frames on paintings in the collection have plaques on them that denote the artist’s name with “N.A.” or “A.N.A.” What do these abbreviations stand for?
“N.A.” indicates that the artist was elected to the National Academy of Design, a prestigious and long-standing arts organization in New York. “A.N.A.” indicates the artist was elected as an “Associate” of the same organization. A special installation at the Mead opening in January 2009 will highlight several contemporary National Academicians.
