I don’t think safety wire was used much on the sidedraft engines. The earlier you go, the more widespread the use of the safety wire. There are several spots on the sidedraft engine with drilled bolts. I tend to use only new lockwashers on the sidedrafts. You might want to wire the bolt heads that hold the bottom of the blower housing to the timing gear cover as these are drilled and not accessible after the engine is assembled. Also the 3 bolts that hold the oil pump to the crankcase. Maybe also the oil galley to main cap bolts? Oh yeah – also the rear main seal housing bolts. I think that’s about all. I think the distributor base bolts are drilled, also the oil pan front and rear bolts – I never lockwire these on the sidedrafts. 4. Each main bearing has a .004 shim “washer” between the cap and block. Is this original? I left then in when I checked the clearances. If you’ve got the clearances you describe, then leave the shims in place. One must be very careful of shims on the Ser. 12
