to be able to recite verb paradigms per se — but the learner does need to be able to recall quickly basic verb forms in order to communicate, and at least some will have to be initially deliberately memorized, given the time factors again. The question is whether that memorization is most efficiently accomplished by some type of organized paradigm, or by isolates as they come up. I suspect that the answer to that is that it varies according to the individual learner’s learning style — but that a certain amount of active memorization still has to take place. In the second category comes to mind information like how many ounces in a pound, inches in a foot, what H2O means, and the type of information that Hirsch defines as cultural literacy. The latter kind of information is normally absorbed over the years within the normal process of living in the L1 — and again, the time factor for classroom learning of L2 will probably require some conscious memorization of basic information.
