Positive mode can be used for most organic compounds, for positive ions, and for compounds containing a basic functional group e.g. amines. Negative mode is used for negative ions, for compounds containing an acidic functional group, and for compounds containing electronegative elements e.g. carboxylic acids, alcohols, saccharides and oligonucleotides.
