So, what is a standalone portable CD writer?
Basically in this context we’re talking about a gadget that contains a laptop style CD or DVD writer, a battery, and an interface for your memory cards. There’s another type of device but I’d probably refer to them as external CD-writers – they have no battery, and no card slot and are therefore no use without a computer. The advantages of a standalone CD/DVD writer – they’re usually smaller and cheaper than a laptop, and you can create a backup copy of your CD. Disadvantages, they’re bigger than a PHD and not as flexible as a laptop – also CD based units can only store ~650Mb/CD, unless the device supports disc spanning.
