So, what are the main differences between the old BST/HST curricula and the new one?
The main difference is that the new curriculum is more than just a syllabus for an examination or a list of things to learn or do. Instead, the curriculum tries to define what an ophthalmologist must be able to do after training. Previous curricula have concentrated on the inputs into training (where the units are, who the trainers are, what books to read, which courses to attend) and process (how many and what sort of clinics to work in, numbers of procedures to perform). The new curriculum defines the outcomes of training. This type of ‘learning outcomes’ curriculum has been adopted by several medical education centres in the UK and overseas.
