–edited due to a massive misstatement Irish Travelers are a distinct ethnic group. They are properly called Pavee. I do not know their origins… I am Rromani, not Pavee. The word “Gypsy” was originally applied to my people… the Rromani. This was by mistake because some bright bulb decided that we came from Egypt. We did not. We came through India, current theory being that we originated in Asia. Irish Travelers were stuck under the label of Gypsy because they were nomadic and had other similarities to the Rrom in lifestyle. Many ethnicities were stuck under the label “Gypsy”. So, yes, they are Gypsies. No, not all Gypsies have the same ethnic makeup. ————–edit I just spoke with a Pavee friend of mine who said that the Pavee have different genetics than non Pavee’s.
