Smiley Face Murders, whats the back story and what is the controversy?
The back story is that two retired New York City detectives believe a number of deaths (up to 40) that authorities have previously believed were accidents, are actually murders. The cases are all college aged males whose bodies were found in various bodies of water across the country. In about 12 of the cases, a graffiti smiley face was found somewhere in the vicinity of the body. There are a few other similarities as well. For example, the men found dead are typically athletic and popular. The smiley face theory has been roundly rejected by various local law enforcement departments, as well as the FBI. Each group of law enforcement that has investigated the theory has found it to be incorrect.
