Yes, we should. They sought freedom from the tyranny of the federal government. They sought to preserve the right of the state over the oppression of federal laws. They sought to preserve their right to self-determination. It was a minority of those who were abolitionists who tore apart our nation. Although their cause was just (there is no justification for slavery) they did not have the right to use the federal government to enact their position on the other states. This was unconstitutional. It is interesting that the north calls the war the American Civil War, while the south and free thinking northerners call it the War Between the States. One considers it a traitorous act while the other considers it their right to oppose a federal government bent on enacting laws which they do not have the authority to enact. State Sovereignty was being taken away by political activists. Sounds just like today.
