Since the recommended protocol requires physicians to keep stores of Buprenorphine in their offices, are there any special regulations or guidelines regarding security, record-keeping, etc.?
USA Response: In fact, physicians are not required to keep medication in the officethey can write a prescription and have the patient go to the pharmacy, get the doses for induction and return. In the real world, however, this is too complicated. Buprenorphine is a schedule III drug, and a locked file cabinet is all that is needed. Certainly, it is strongly recommended that a very clear medication inventory log be kept; the DEA is going to look for misuse by MDs. France Response: I only have experience with Buprenorphine delivered by a pharmacist, in a general community pharmacy, or within a Treatment Center. Administration of medications by physicians is not an option in France, except for emergency medicine.
