Should young men be banned from driving on public roads?
Yes – young male drivers are not the greatest advertisement for road safety, and they are responsible for a disproportionally large number of accidents and fatalities. I wouldn’t ban them from the roads though – all drivers were new drivers at first – it’s the experience of driving on our own that really turns us into seasoned drivers. So I wouldn’t ban them – the problems they cause are not so much age or gender, as eagerness – if you ban them till they’re 25, they’re going to be just as eager (if not more) and just as inexperienced. My idea would be VASTLY unpopular, I know, but still might actually happen. Have you heard of pay-as-you-drive insurance? Basically, you have a black box installed in your boot and you pay nothing unless you actually use your car. Then, how much you pay depends upon your usual risk factors (age, no claims, etc) and the time of day you are driving.
