Should we risk hurting families feelings by eloping or just have actual wedding for familys sake?

It’s not silly to ask them to come from so far away. Since you said it would hurt their feelings if you elope and it seems like you care for them, then I think it might be a good idea to have a small wedding and reception close to where you and your fiance are studying (unless you can find a better location that might be easier for everyone to travel to). Since, I assume, you’ll be going on your honeymoon right after the wedding, you might want to suggest some places the out of state visitors can visit for fun, so that they can still enjoy their trip after you’ve left. That way, everyone can feel included and comfortable and it can be done within your budget. Best wishes!
