Should we replace the torsion springs on our garage door open if they are deformed but not broken?
This answer is for torsion (windup) springs only. Occasionally torsion springs will not stay straight and do resemble a snake. Most of the time this happens when someone inexperienced winds the spring and forcibly stretches the spring to prevent the coils binding on one another, usually when torsion springs are installed with the door up. Most torsion spring are installed with the door closed. I would wait for them to break (replace both when one does). Post a picture if you can. I have one customer whose one door spring has looked like this for 20 years (I have tried to make it look normal, it will not go back) and it has not broken yet. Remember when torsion springs do break the tube they are installed on contains the spring and they do not go flying like stretch springs.
