It might save a lot of women and little girls the trauma of rape if men knew that they could be identified immediately by their DNA and would solve many other crimes very quickly. I’ve had my DNA recorded voluntarily.

For it to be accurate, they’d have to test every person in the entire world. Also, not every baby has all that bloodwork done. Parents can opt out– especially the ones born at home. I would NEVER do that to my kids. Sure, I understand your argument– if there was ever a body found, they’d know whose it was and stuff like that. I just think that would be a form of the government getting too big & taking away individual rights. Some crooked employee could type in the name of one of their enemies, get their DNA & stage evidence against them. Just b/c someone works for the gov’t certainly doesn’t mean they’re a good person. Also, I think it would make people less responsible… I mean, “Who cares who my daughter play with. If she goes missing, they can find her better.” or something like that. I personally would not do it.

No. Bascially no. It might seem nice to collect data about babies with diseases to help future generations, but were talking about the government here (Uk), it won’t be all cosy and nice. It wouldn’t just be for ‘research’ (which has it moral issues too- like ‘designer babies’) it would be for police etc as well. Bascially, would you really trust the government, who loses our data as much as it does already, with the one bit that makes us who we are? I certainly wouldn’t. Looking at it plainly, it seems good as criminals can be caught quicker, but soon it will be more than that- people are already being fined over petty things as not putting the rubbish in the right bin- I’d hate to think what misuse the government would do with it. In fact, I’d leave the country! Good old Orwell I say.
